Brakes- how long do they last and what to replace with?

I have a 2000 Savage with just over 3k miles. My front brakes seem to be quite warn and they squeal pretty bad when stopping. How long should the pads last?? I am the 2nd owner of the bike and it had 2k miles on it when I bought it and has squealed since day one. I can also feel the brake dragging when I back the bike up before riding.

How tough is it to change the brakes, is there a better brand (pads) to get and should I change the rotor at the same time?? (OEM rotors only or are their other options?)
